Neema- Kiswahili for Grace

They called me Grace!
I believe Grace was an amazing woman, she must have been! She built my mother into the woman she is today!

Unfortunately , she passed just around I the period I was born.  It’s tough growing up with no grandparents.  My dads parents passed on before I was born and my mums dad died too when I was just a little girl, safe to say I never got to experience the bond grand children have with their grand parents.

However it is not all a sob story, because African culture is a beautifu thing. It’s amazing the way life carries on even after one passes on. It is common in Kenya for parents to name their children after their parents. The first born daughter is usually named after her dad’s mother and then the second daughter is named after the mum’s mum.  For instance my sister is named after my dad’s mum and I’m named after my mom’s mum.

It is also common to name a child after a special person to the family who passes on just around the birth of the child. The new baby then carries on the legacy of the deceased. Don’t get me wrong this is not some black girl magic ✨ it’s purely carrying legacy on.

They called me Grace after my grandmother I know, what big shoes to fill in!
Grace  Wasonga was my grandmother, my mother’s mother.

The Late Grace and Apollo Wasonga

How beautiful was she!

See my mum sisters call me their mother! Because Grace is my name!

For those of you who have been keeping tabs on my life for a year so now , you might know that I gave a ted talk last year on identity. It’s amazing how a year later  I am still learning new things about myself.

I wish that Grace may always flows within me , Grace is my only Christian name ! When faced in challenging situations I pray that I may be filled with grace!

In the good and the bad times, I pray that people may look at me and say that is a graceful woman . She is filled with so much grace!

I pray that God’s grace may follow me all the days of my life so that I may dwell in the House of the Lord forever!

[Intro: Stormzy]

I’m blinded by your grace I’m blinded by your grace, by your grace I’m blinded by your grace I’m blinded by your
[Chorus: Stormzy & MNEK]
Lord I’ve been broken Although I’m not worthy You fixed me, now I’m blinded By your grace You came and saved me Lord I’ve been broken Although I’m not worthy You fixed me, now I’m blinded By your grace You came and saved me
[Verse 1: Stormzy]
One time for the Lord And one time for the cause And one round of applause
One time for Fraser T Smith on the chords I feel we got one I stay prayed up then I get the job done
Yeah I’m Jedidah’s yout, but I’m God’s girl But I’m up now, look at what God’s done
Now I rule tour, look at what God did On the main stage runnin’ ‘round topless Phone Flipz and I tell him that he got this
This is God’s plan, they can never stop this Like… wait right there, can you stop my verse?
You saved this kid and I’m not your first It’s not by blood and it’s not by birth But oh my God what a God I serve
[Chorus: Stormzy & MNEK]
Lord I’ve been broken Although I’m not worthy You fixed me, now I’m blinded By your grace You came and saved me
Lord I’ve been broken Although I’m not worthy You fixed me, now I’m blinded By your grace You came and saved me
I said a prayer this morning I prayed I would find the way To another day, I was so afraid ‘Til you came and saved You came and saved me And the rain was pouring ‘Cause the sun faded away Now I’m in a better place No longer afraid Blinded by your grace🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵
